Abstract
A comparison is made of a number of techniques that have been used for the enhancement of atmospherically degraded astronomical images. These include simple deconvolution or inverse filtering, speckle interferometry with and without phase information, and adaptive optical systems. Each approach has its range of applicability in terms of object brightness, angular extent, and structure. The role of the exposure time has been emphasized, and it is pointed out that simple deconvolution has greater potential than has previously been recognized.
