Image processing is striving to attain the status of a scientific discipline. What has evolved at the moment is a collection of techniques and procedures for manipulating pictorial data, but a cohesive theory of image processing remains to be developed. In its current state, the digital computer plays an important role. It is a powerful tool for developing, refining and testing algorithms. Its effectiveness is dependent, however, on the programming language which is available to the image processing analyst. The language most widely used today, FORTRAN IV, is not well suited as an algorithmic language. This paper explores the possible use of APL in a picture processing environment. It shows that improvements can be made with APL and what those improvements are.
