Abstract
The concept of chain coding, originally intended for digital processing of line drawing data, has been used in an adaptive transform image coding procedure to improve its performance. In the previously developed dual coder algorithm the run-length coding technique applied to encode consecutive zeros in the transform domain is replaced by a chain coding procedure. The algorithm is based on the assumption that the boundary of the non-zero region of the transform domain can efficiently be represented by a fixed set of line segments known as chain codes. Preliminary results indicate significant improvements over the basic dual coder algorithm. The additional implementational complexity is modest.
