Abstract
The HIPPARCOS satellite, a project of the European Space Agency (ESA.), is devoted to very high accuracy astrometry for establishing a stellar catalog of 100 000 stars to an accuracy of about two milliarc-seconds. Optically the satellite consists in an all reflective SCHMIDT telescope of 29 cm aperture having the capability to image simultaneously two sky areas separated by a constant angle of 58 degrees called the Basic Angle. (A detailed desciption of this satellite and its requirements can be found in ref 1,2 and 3). The funtion of beam splitting is performed in the entrance pupil of the telescope by the BEAM COMLINER. This paper deals with the design of this mirror, the different steps of its fabrication and the procedure we used for the determination of its optical parameters.
