Abstract
EM (expectation-maximization) algorithms for maximum likelihood estimation have received considerable attention in recent years due to their computational feasibility in tomographic image reconstruction. It is less widely recognized, however, that EN algorithms can be equally applicable to image processing in general. In this paper, the theoretical foundation of EM algorithms is first outlined. Applications of EN algorithms in both image reconstruction and image processing are then described, and some characteristics of these EM algorithms are discussed.
