Abstract
At a solid surface, the atoms rearrange with respect to their periodic position such as to establish equilibrium with the adjacent vacuum (I-2). Rearragement seems to go beyond the atomic scale for polar materials and experimental hints have been given by different methods (3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10).
