Abstract
The M4 mirror is the 4th mirror in the optical train of E-ELT telescope and is the one committed for the turbulence and wind shaking correction. The voice coil technology has been proven to be very interesting in terms of performance and fault tolerance in the past projects (LBT, Magellan, VLT) and it can guarantee high stroke and high correction speed joined to high precision and stability. In this paper, we will we will simulate the behavior of the system with four different seeing conditions giving a good representation of most the observing night typical cases. The simulation code allows to apply or not a bound to the forces of each M4 actuator used for the turbulence correction in order to fully characterize not only the maximum correction capabilities of the system but also the performance degradation in case of limited actuator capabilities applicable. To fully explore this second point, we suggested a modal cut algorithm which can be used as guideline for a smart thresholding system.
