22 March 2019 Digital optical microscope (housing inside biosafety cabinet): a promising imaging technology for micro- and cell-biology, and histopathology

Abstract
Conventional laboratory activities for research studies, more specifically in Biology and histopathology, involves back and forth movement of biological or tissue specimen all around the laboratory workspace - from Biosafety Cabinet (BSC) to workbench of microscopy imaging unit. This mobility imposes a serious concern of contamination of the biological specimen. We study design and develop of an optical microscopic imaging system - that can be adapted inside BSC - which remains as a challenge from technological aspects. This (automated) system with motion control in all 3-directions facilitates recording as well as observation of the biological procedure (in real time) being performed inside BSC. Experimental validation studies were carried out in a diverse biological specimen and demonstrate that this imaging technology facilitates study of miniscule biological specimen (cells and bacteria) not only easy but also enable to undertake sophisticated biological/clinical procedures.
