Abstract
The paper examines techniques whereby nonlinear adaptive processors can be introduced into the application of adaptive communications equalisation. This has traditionally been seen as an area restricted to the application of basically linear systems. It is shown that data equalisation may be formulated as an inherently non-linear problem. This leads us to propose a non-linear equaliser structure based on multi-layer perceptrons. Simulations are presented which verify the superior performance of this equaliser compared to linear and decision feedback equalisers.
