Abstract

Although the vast majority of television cameras using charge-coupled (CCD) imagers produce video signals compatible with one of the familiar scanning standards, the internal structure of these imagers may often permit their use in non-standard scan modes offering additional useful functions. Some special scan modes may result in production of non-standard output signals while others preserve the usual output. This is a survey of some of these scanning modes, the effect they have on the output signal format, the artifacts which each may generate and the precautions to be taken when each is used.
