Abstract
A general theory for coherent coupling between two co-propagating or counterpropagating guided waves is formulated within the slowly varying envelope approximation. A pair of coupled nonlinear equations is obtained for the evolution of envelope functions. A numerical result is given for coherent coupling of two co-propagating pulses in a single mode fiber.
