Abstract
The natural circulation capability of the primary circuit directly affects the safe operation of the reactor under accidents such as loss-of-flow accident. In this paper, we model a megawatt-scale unit using the system analysis program RELAP5 to consider the effect of the steam generator U-tube arrangement on the natural circulation characteristics of the primary circuit. It is shown that: the flow rate of the primary circuit coolant at steady state varies according to different U-tube arrangements. During the long-term process of natural circulation, all three U-tube arrangements can establish an effective natural circulation. The horizontal-U type has the best cooling effect on the core and the highest natural circulation flow rate for the same design basis conditions. The inverted-U type steam generator showed a phenomenon in which the pressure in the outlet chamber was greater than that in the inlet chamber.
