Abstract
Microchannel plate (MCP) is a crucial charged-particle multiplier, whose open area ratio (OAR) is a key factor affecting the collection efficiency thereof. A funnel-shaped MCP enlarges the opening surface of the input side, increasing the odds of charged particles entering the multipliable microchannels successfully; Besides, it can both promote collection efficiency and keep high strength. It is generally believed that the larger the OAR, the better. However, our review indicated that the sharp tips of the funnel-shaped MCP with an over 90% OAR induced the lethal discharge ablation. In this paper, Vacuum Photoelectron Imaging Test Facility (VPIT) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were applied to investigate the tip discharge phenomenon and the surface morphology of the MCP, respectively. It impacted that once the tips of the funnel-shaped were less than 100nm, the MCP was particularly prone to discharge ablation damage. Therefore, we should consider both the detection efficiency and the tip discharge on the input end of the MCPs for credible high-performance detection.
