Abstract
To explore the variation characteristics of heavy pollution episodes in Hunan Province and the influence of meteorological conditions on different primary pollutants, the duration and temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of 68 heavy pollution episodes are investigated in this study, based on the environmental and meteorological observation data in 14 cities of Hunan Province from 2015 to 2021. Then, Hunan Province is divided into four high-impact areas of air pollution according to the traceability analysis of pollutants, transmission path and topographic characteristics. Moreover, a detailed analysis of the feedback mechanism of meteorological factors for different primary pollutants is conducted. The results show that the heavy pollution process in Hunan is mainly particulate matter pollution. The annual variation of heavy pollution episodes shows a unimodal distribution, and the duration is generally not more than three days. The pollutants mainly affect Hunan in three paths from the northern Hubei Province. The pollutants are accumulated mainly from local sources, followed by the mix of external input and local accumulation. The favorable meteorological conditions for particulate matter pollution episodes include the stable boundary layer, the obvious low-level temperature inversion and the high humidity near the surface. The ozone pollution is mainly affected by the conditions suitable for the photolysis of the precursors.
