Abstract
High performance digital systems will soon take advantage of optical data transmission. Optical bus systems allow to connect electronic boards via several parallel high speed optical data links. Each board is provided with opto-electronic converters (laser diodes or light modulators and photo diodes) for the emission and detection of modulated optical signals. The light is confined by total internal reflection within an optical backplane e.g. a plane-parallel glass-plate.
