Abstract
We present a novel approach for estimating confidence intervals (CIs) of bit error rates (BERs) in high-speed serial links, addressing the shortcomings of the conventional binomial method, which inaccurately presumes errors to be independent and identically distributed. Next, we introduce an alternate method which computes the CI from the Markov chain model of decision-feedback-equalization-induced error propagation in high-speed serial links, illustrating the difference of error distributions obtained by this method and the conventional approach. Finally, we propose a technique that curtails the computation time of our introduced Markov-chain-based method from quadratic growth to a more tractable level, thereby making the proposed method more practical when estimating CIs for low-BER systems. This method has the potential for enhanced accuracy in BER estimation for high-speed serial links.
