Abstract
This paper introduces the general principles behind the conducting of testing by Japan Camera and Optical Instruments Inspection and Testing Institute (JCII). JCII's prime concern is the correspondence between physically measured data and actual performance obtained with the instruments under test. In order to obtain meaningful data when preparing testing equipment, establishing test methods and procedures, and setting up criteria for the assessment of the instruments JCII tries to simulate as closely as possible the situation under which the instruments being tested would actually be used. This paper focuses on the testing of photography-related products, especially camera lenses, and introduces how JCII's principles have been realized in developing testing equipment and establishing measuring procedures and criteria. Among many factors to be assessed in camera lenses two important ones, the optical transfer function (OTF) and veiling glare (VG) which greatly affect the image quality, are dealt with in this paper.
