Abstract
Contrast resolution in CCD digitized mammograms is difficult because of storage requirements for 12 bit gray level resolution and because of the logarithmic amplification needed for optical densities above 1.6. By assigning gray level ranges to specific optical density ranges based on a region of interest selection during a pre-digitization scan, contrast for lower optical densities can be preserved. Comparison of the equivalence of film and digital images was confirmed by 6 radiologists reading 46 biopsy proven films (12 cases). Diagnostic performance was also tested and showed similar error rates (17%) for both modalities.
