Abstract
Based on a scattering matrix formalism the resonance frequencies of microwave resonators can be calculated by solving the eigenvalue problem. This method provides the possibility to determine the quality factor of the resonator because stored and lost energy are well defined. We demonstrate the method for the examples of a 35 GHz Bragg resonator for the TE14-mode in a circular waveguide and the 140 GHz KfK-gyrotron cavity for the TE„,e-mode.
