The optimum coupling of a free space Gaussian beam into a corrugated waveguide can be achieved by particular mode mixtures of HE11 and HE12 hybrid modes [1]. The wanted amount of the HE12 mode can be generated from the HE11 in a mode converter with periodic diameter variation. The design of such mode converters and first measurements are presented.
