Abstract
A proposal for a novel radar which performs the surveillance and identification functions simultaneously is put forward. The system consists of an active phased array which generates as many simultaneous and independent antenna beams as required to fill the required field of view (FOV), in the transmit and receive modes. The sensitivity of the resulting staring array is the same as that corresponding to a conventional scanning array when the target is non-fluctuating and comparable to the sensitivity of the scanning array when the target is fluctuating. (Swerling, type 1). Realisibility aspects of the proposal are examined.
