Abstract
Among the numerous publications about coherent and incoherent detection a comparison of a far infrared Fourier- transform spectrometer (FIR-FTS) with a FIR-heterodyne spectrometer for stratospheric remote sensing is given for the first time. The FTS is a broadband sensor with the capability of measuring several species simultaneously. The throughput is limited by the size of the optics and the resolution by the maximum path difference in the interferometer. The signal-to-noise ratio for an FTS is given by
