Abstract
Sol-gel is one of the most promising novel techniques to realise optical waveguides: as a matter of fact, it is in principle very simple and allows to a good extent the tailoring of the produced waveguide to the needs of a particular device.' However, in order to produce practical devices it is necessary to realise channel rather than planar waveguides, so as to produce interconnections and all the required circuit geometries. We are therefore aiming our efforts to the development of several techniques, capable of patterning the surface of a sol-gel film with the required definition, accuracy and repeatability.
