Abstract

Manufacturing efficiency improvements have traditionally been driven by the requirements of innovative manufacturers and their ability to modify, adapt and adopt technologies and techniques not intuitively related to the processes currently employed in manufacturing processes. The application of image processing to the requirements of manufacturers has thus far been limited to off-line verification tasks, where the benefits are notable but the impact on manufacturing flexibility, efficiency and productivity are negligible. It is now possible to incorporate image processing within the process control inner loop, transparently, to realize a degree of product quality and process productivity only speculated upon in the past.
