Abstract
Infrared thermography allows the instant passive thermal mapping of a remote surface, noninvasively and without contact. Under controlled conditions precision temperature measurements can be made of these surfaces. IR thermographic equipment has evolved to the point where it is portable, versatile, rugged and reliable; applications are found in virtually every phase of manufacturing and materials inspection. This paper traces the evolution of IR thermography from its beginnings to the present. Current commercially available equipment is classified and described and an overview of applications is presented. Finally several specific examples of industrial applications are described and illustrated, and a glimpse of the near future is offered based on the most recent developments in equipment and software.
