Abstract
The use of tapered fibers for mid-IR evanescent wave spectroscopy is presented. Tapering optical fibers leads to a substantial signal enhancement as compared to conventional fiber absorption. A ray-tracing model for the simulation of the fiber optic absorption has been developed. This model shows the increase in penetration depth due to the decrease of the incidence angle to be the most important factor for signal enhancement.
