Abstract
Application of Fourier transform (FT) Raman and infrared spectroscopy to the characterization of self-localized excitations (polarons, bipolarons, and solitons) in conducting polymers is described. FT-Raman spectroscopy is useful in elucidating the types and structures of self- localized excitations formed upon doping. The information obtained affords a better understanding of the mechanism of electrical conduction. Phase-modulation infrared (PMIR) spectroscopy is a powerful tool for studying the recombination dynamics of self-localized excitations created by photoexcitation.
