Abstract
This paper examines the design of a linear motor combining piezoceramic actuation with viscoelastic damping. The actuator consists of aluminum discs alternately treated with piezoceramics and viscoelastic material. The discs are joined together by a rod through their center and cantilevered inside a cylinder to form a linear motor. This configuration offers increased design flexibility. The issues of a combined passive/active actuator design are discussed in terms of vibration isolation.
