13 September 1994Geostationary earth radiation budget instrument
GERB is an instrument which has been designed by a team led by British Aerospace Space Systems Ltd. to measure the Earth Radiation Budget from a Geostationary Satellite. The results presented in this paper are the outcome of a Phase A design study of an AO instrument to meet a set of science requirements defined by ESTEC and a Science Advisory Group (SAG). The instrument has been designed for accommodation on the Meteosat Second Generation Satellite ( MSG ) due for launch in mid 2000. The design could however be adapted to suit the 3 - axis stabilised platforms of other agencies. The Phase A design is a proof of concept study and the overall conclusion is that an instrument satisfying both the scientific requirements and spacecraft constraints is feasible. The instrument design allows unique temporal measurements to be made of the balance between short and long wavelength radiation leaving the Earth's atmosphere. The data will be highly complementary with the data sets gathered by instruments in low Earth orbit.
