Abstract

The effects of MTF, scatter radiation and display on the contrast-detail characteristics of medical film/screen radiography are examined. Theoretical relationships between these quantities are derived using signal-detection and effective aperture approaches. It is seen that scatter radiation significantly affects the perceptible information in the images according to the scatter degradation factor and is somewhat a function of subject contrast. It is shown that the dose efficiency of film/screen radiography can be improved by a factor of two by the elimination of scatter.
