20 April 1995 Optical subnet concept for the NASA Deep Space Network

Abstract
For NASA deep space missions, an optical subnet can provide significantly increased telecommunications performance (greater than 6 dB above the DSN 70 meter at Ka-Band) and provide full line-of-sight coverage of the ecliptic, 24 hours a day, with high weather availability. This paper describes the results of recent work in defining such a network including the ground terminal and network design, its projected performance as well as a rough order definition of its development, implementation and operations costs.
