8 September 1995 Staring focal plane arrays for advanced ambient temperature infrared sensors

Abstract
This paper discusses design concepts for staring focal plane arrays of thin film resistance bolometer IR detectors, integrated with advanced signal conditioning and readout microelectronic circuits on the same silicon chip. These monolithic detector arrays are being developed for smart infrared sensors operated at ambient temperature. It is intended that the on-chip VLSI microcircuit include both analogue-to-digital conversion and signal processing functions. A description is given of detector fabrication at the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO), Salisbury, Australia, and system performance is considered for detector arrays integrated with new CMOS signal conditioning and readout circuits under development at the National Defence Research Establishment and University of Linkoping, Sweden.
