Abstract
Recently the retrieval of an image based on its content from an efficiently compressed database has attracted significant research interest. Most of such work to data assumes that the sample image has the same orientation as the retrieved image, and performs poorly if the orientation of the observed image is different from the image in database. However, there are instances where comparisons of images with different orientations are needed. We propose a new image coding and retrieval method which allows the retrieval of images that may be oriented differently than, but otherwise similar to the sample image. In this method, we introduce the idea of using the absolute reference angle to represent the orientation of an image. An image can be coded into two separate parts: part one containing the orientation information, and part two containing the texture information which is orientation independent. Then an image retrieval algorithm which only compares the rotational invariant parts of the images is employed to achieve orientation independent retrieval. We proposed and analyzed several mathematical forms of the absolute reference angle. Application of our method in fractal coded image retrieval is discussed and demonstrated.
