Abstract
Research and development for image understanding systems (RADIUS), a two-phase five-year project, was aimed at increasing imagery analyst (IA) productivity, and improving the quality and timeliness of IA products. A key feature of RADIUS was model-supported exploitation (MSE) in which two- dimensional and three-dimensional models for a site are used as the basis of much of the subsequent analysis. Image understanding (IU) techniques figure strongly in this analysis. This paper describes the challenges faced in the three-year phase II RADIUS testbed system (RTS) development. The development, testing, evaluation, and incremental enhancement of the RTS are described, as the project attempted to define and meet the real-world needs of imagery interpretation and analysis.
