Abstract
A current personal computer has a high clock speed, large cache and disc memory, and it can run graphics and multimedia software systems that were originally designed for graphics workstations exclusively. The goal of the current research is to investigate a personal computer-based visualization system that has its own data visualization software, processing units, and data storage units. The architecture of this personal computer-based visualization system is similar to that of a visualization system using a graphics workstation. Since the personal computer used in the current visualization system is a laptop computer; it is highly portable, and with its network capability, it can be used for some realtime simulation and interactive applications wherever an internet access is available. The data visualization software system is AVS/Express, which can run on personal computers and workstations as well. In this paper, designed considerations of a personal computer-based visualization system will be examined. Performances of this system with a workstation-based visuali system will be compared. Integrated visualization and web techniques with tools such as VRML and JAVA for interactive and cooperative visualization practices will be explored. A visualization case study with data generated by a numerical simulation model will be presented. A live visualization session using a laptop personal computer will be demonstrated.
