Abstract
Application of high pressures to a molecular system modifies the intermolecular potential due to changes in the average intermolecular distances. That causes considerable changes in physical properties of the system. Recently we have performed high pressure dielectric studies of several liquid crystals exhibiting the nematic, smectic A and smectic B polymorphism. In the article we present some result demonstrating the influence of pressure on the dielectric anisotropy, dielectric relaxation time characterizing the molecular reorientations around the short axes and related activation parameters, and on the nematic potential. Some differences in the behaviors of particular substances are interpreted as caused by the details of molecular structures and intermolecular interactions.
