3 October 1998 Modified internal calibration lamp source for ETM+ on Landsat 7

Abstract
THe general configuration of the Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus that will fly on Landsat 7 closely follows that of the whiskbroom Thematic Mapper scanners on Landsats 5 and 7. Design modification include changes to the on-board calibration system. The addition of solar calibrators reduces the need to rely on the internal calibrator for long-term calibration of the reflective bands, but miniature incandescent lamps are still used to monitor short-term variations in system response. Internal calibration is accomplished by means of an oscillating shutter than passe immediately ahead of the prime focal plane each time the scan mirror reverse direction. Mounted on the shutter is a miniature projection system fed by a system of sapphire light rods that transit light from stationary, redundant tungsten lamps mounted at the center of oscillation of the moving assembly. The area of the shutter adjacent to the optics is painted flat black. Its temperature is continuously monitored, and it provides the reference radiance level for DC-restoration of all bands. A mirror on the shutter reflects light from a blackbody to provide an additional reference level for the thermal band.
