Abstract
A model is described to compute the surface evaporative fraction from remotely sensed data. The scheme is based on the fact that much of the variability of the evaporative fraction is determined by the fractional cover of green vegetation, the remaining variability being caused by variations in soil wetness. Vegetation transpiration is obtained from an AVHRR vegetation index whereas soil wetness is obtained from the SSM/I microwave polarization difference temperature. Comparison of remotely sensed evaporative fraction with ground-based data from FIFE yield an average absolute error of 0.036 which is within experimental error. It is also shown that the remotely sensed evaporative fraction is largely independent of soil textural composition.
