22 December 1998 Categorical color mapping for gamut mapping: II. Using block average image

Abstract
Several improvements of categorical color mapping are introduced in this paper. The categorical color mapping decides the best mapping point to keep categorical relationship between a source device and a destination device. The first improvement is that the Simplex iteration technique was implemented to the categorical color mapping in order to search the best mapping point in the destination space. The second improvement is that the categorical color mapping is designed in the CIELAB space. A block average image was used as color patches for the categorical color naming to developed a new gamut mapping strategy that challenges to carry on an image gamut mapping instead of a device gamut mapping. The above two improvements and the new trial are introduced for gamut mapping of a CRT to a printer.
