21 December 1999 Stability analysis of color error diffusion

Abstract
An error diffusion system can be unstable due to inadequate design. It can generate ever-increasing quantization error that masks the input and produces unacceptable output images. For black and white images, the instability is mainly caused by two factors. One is an error diffusion weight set that over-compensates. The second is an input signal set that exceeds the output gamut. We have discovered that quantization could be another source of instability for color error diffusion when vector quantization is applied. The requirements for a quantization scheme that leads to a stable system are analyzed.
