Abstract
Algorithms for bilevel display of continuous tone images should provide reproduction of edge detail and proper rendition of continuous tone regions with binary textures that adequately reproduce image gray scale without introducing additional structure into the image. Error diffusion algorithms have been shown to have the capability of generating visually appealing binary images, but existing schemes will sometimes generate undesirable textural artifacts. A new image binarization algorithm is developed based on a Markov random field texture model and an edge based constraint matrix. The resulting Markov random field error diffusion algorithm generates nondeterministic binary textures that overcome some of the problems associated with conventional binarization algorithms.
