Abstract
This paper describes the design and development of a generic Monitor, Recorder and Simulator Unit (MRSU) which can be used during the development, trials and operational phases of a radar signal processing unit (SPU). The Monitor permits internal radar parameters and variables form within the processing chain to be retrieved, viewed and changed in real-time. The Recorder can be used to record and manipulate real-time data, to playback (real and synthetic) data into the radar SPU and record the outputs. The Simulator can be used in conjunction with a radar reference model, data from the Recorder or any other pre-recorded data, to verify the accuracy of the SPU implementation. The design of the MRSU adheres to three constraints: (a) shall be re-usable across other radar systems (i.e. generic) (b) Shall employ only commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware and software (c) Shall be an integrated unit. Traditional methods fail to exploit growth opportunities and flexibility generated by utilizing COTS and reuse. It is demonstrated that focusing on these issues form the outset results in improved productivity, quality, reduced timescales and economic benefit.
