Abstract
We present a novel phase demodulation technique in which two speckled waves with different polarization states are coupled in a photorefractive crystal subjected to application of a fast-oscillating ac-electric field. It is shown that the sensitivity of an interferometer with a Bi12TiO20 crystal based on this technique is only 1.5 times worse than the classical homodyne detection limit. To the best of our knowledge, this is the most sensitive adaptive photorefractive interferometer ever reported.
