In this paper, we present a brief overview of the most common electromagnetic model used to analyze the properties and performance of photonic crystal structures, namely the plane wave method. This method is commonly used to determine the electromagnetic dispersion properties of a photonic crystal structure and thereby provides key insight into the nature of the band diagram, which ultimately reveals the presence of a band gap. Following the overview, we then apply this tool to estimate the effects of fabrication errors on the confinement properties of photonic crystal slab waveguides. As we show in this paper, fundamental issues related to a shift in the allowable states in a photonic crystal wave are show to be a source of significant propagation loss.
