Abstract
To launch profitable commercial LBS the LBS value chain is awaiting the commercial availability of precise location technologies, that coupled with devices capable of displaying maps in color, can deliver real value to the end user. Currently the CDMA world, with commercially available A-GPS technologies is facing a unique window of opportunity, while the GSM/GPRS world is awaiting to advance from its present Cell/sector ID precision level. Shared utilities to manage privacy, personalization, GIS and billing are key to profitable deployment of LBS.
