Abstract
Clouds can have important effects on light propagation problems such as earth-space communication. The cloud effects may be different due to their occurrence probabilities amounts size distributions and probabilities of cloud-free line-of-sight (PCFLOS). The volume extinction scattering absorption and backscattering coefficients of clouds as a function of wavelength from 0.4 μm to 4.0 μm are evaluated with the Mie theory. The typical values of the volume extinction coefficients of water clouds vary from 48 to 150 km-1. The cloud conditions could be monitored with a Total Sky Imager. Cloud occurrence probabilities average amounts and PCFLOS as functions of elevation angle and time can be estimated from the image.
