Abstract
We present an extension of the modified Gaussian approximation method to analyze multimode optical fiber with arbitrary axial-symmetric refractive index profile. Unlike to known Gaussian approximation, optical fiber with an arbitrary index profile is considered as multi-cladding optical waveguide, and core region profile is represented as the set of N layers in which the refractive index can be taken as a constant. Numerical values of the core mode parameter and propagation constant were obtained and compared with exact solutions. In all cases, good accuracy was noticed.
