Abstract
We investigated the use of a fibre Bragg grating as a temperature sensor under dynamic conditions. Simulations indicated that the time response of the device is determined by heat conduction from the surface of the cladding to the fibre core where the grating is located. These calculations also indicated that the time response could be improved by nearly an order of magnitude through thinning of the cladding by chemical etching. The sensor was tested experimentally by moving it at different rates through a fast flowing column of heated air. Without etching, the temperature in the fibre core reached 98% of its equilibrium value within 0.9 seconds. This was confirmed experimentally. According to calculations, it should be possible to reduce the response time to 0.1 seconds if the cladding diameter is 20 μm.
