Abstract
The directional decomposition has already been introduced as a pertinent tool for image coding. In this paper, this approach is optimized with several steps of refinements in order to improve the compression ratio (up to 120:1) and the quality of the decoded image. After the presentation of the coding strategy, results are shown for various real images.
