Abstract
To prove the concept of the optical butting method which is used to extend the field of view of an imaging system, we have built a prototype camera. In this camera, the optical image is divided into four parts each of which is received by a corresponding image sensor. In this paper, we present an approach which is capable of compositing the four image parts to form a full image. The response function of the camera is estimated so that we can get a linear camera response. The homography matrices between the four image parts are computed using a feature based image registration method. Vignetting artifacts are removed by vignetting correction factors. Finally, a gradient based image stitching method is proposed to remove the intensity inconsistency.
